In 2007 Stephen Dupont was named recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant for his ongoing work in Afghanistan.
This prestigious award in the past has been endowed upon photographers such as Eugene Richards, Paolo Pellegrin, Letizia Battaglia, Sebastiao Salgado and Ernesto Bazan amongst others.
The grant's mission as quoted from the newly established website "is to support and encourage photographers producing humanistic photo stories in the tradition of the legendary American photo essayist who sought to expose the truth about issues affecting and afflicting mankind…"
The new website for the fund has been recently launched as of June 1, 2011 and includes a selection of the works of its past 33 recipients including that of Stephen Dupont.

If you happen to be passing by Northern NSW in the coming months, make sure you drop in and see this exhibition. It's always a fantastic show and the Tweed River Art Gallery is one of Australia's finest regional galleries. One of my "Weapons Platoon" portraits appears in the show.
Join Stephen Dupont tomorrow alongside filmaker and photography book collector Paul Goldman, photography book publisher John Ogden, and former photo editor of The Sydney Herald Mike Bowers, as they discuss narration through the visual mediums.

Stephen Dupont's "Marine Journal" has been published in The Aperture Foundation's publication 'Photographic Memory; The Album in the Age of Photograhy' copublished with the Library of Congress.
The book "traces the rise of the album from the turn of the century to the present day, showcasing some of the most important examples in the history of the medium, as collected by the Library of Congress..."
"The book includes works by photographers and filmmakers such as F. Holland Day, Jim Goldberg, Dorothea Lange, Duane Michals, Leni Riefenstahl, and W. Eugene Smith..."
"At a time when the physical collection of photographs is becoming largely immaterial through digital means,Photographic Memory is a comprehensive illustrated history of a form of presentation that became an art form in itself—a history that has seen radical shifts in the role of handmade artist’s objects."
My favourite music duo along with a few of my pictures. Enjoy!

Try and get along to see some the many amazing shows and seminars being put on as part of this year's Head On Festival. I will be among many speakers presenting this weekend at the National Art School. Along with Mike Bowers, John Donegan and Raena Lea-Shannon I will take part in the discussion titled "From Gutenberg to ipad - The Future of Photojournalism and How to Survive in a Changing Industry", which starts at 10am on Saturday May 14th.
I was fortunate to be invited last week to participate in Ken Cato's incredibly inspiring and innovative design conference down in Melbourne. I presented about my hand made photography books and got to see some of the other artist's work which was nothing less than brilliant. The stand outs were Nick Bell, Kasimir Burgess, Christopher Doyle, Adam Hunt, Natan Linder, Iain McCaig, Sanky and Susan Bonds.
I am back from my second trip to Papua New Guinea for my Gardner Peabody Fellowship at Harvard. The project is coming along well as I continue my documentation about "De-Tribalization" on PNG societies. I showed some of my work-in-progress to friends at my new place in Austinmer on the south coast.
Aperture is about to release a very cool new book which I am featured in called "Photographic Memory: The Album in the Age of Photography." Edited by the Library of Congress curator of photography Verna Curtis, this book traces the rise of the photo album from the turn of the century to the present day, showcasing some of the most important examples in the history of the medium, as collected by the Library of Congress. I feel humbled to be sitting alongside some of my favourite photographers, W. Eugene Smith, Danny Lyon, Duane Michaels and Jim Goldberg.
My current ACP touring exhibition "Afghanistan: The Perils of Freedom 1993 - 2009" is showing at Albury Art Gallery, Australia. To here a podcast of my floor talk on March 19, 2011 click here.
