'Photography as Activism' - 'Images For Social Change' by Michelle Bogre

Michelle Bogres, doucmentary photographer, writer and copyright lawer's book 'Photography as Activism"  published in 2011 urges emerging photographers and long time users of the medium to use their work to expose issues and motivate change.

She stresses that photographic images are some of the most influential tools of our time to evoke and create social and evironmental awareness and change.

An appropriate example would be of one of the technical fathers of photography Ansel Adams, whose photos of the American west were inspired by his desire to protect and gain protection for these areas.

The book provides its interested readers with a relative theory and history of the mediums role in social activism and provides discussions with some of the worlds most important contemporary photographers.

It calls to inspire individuals using this medium to use their art to create a better world at the same time creating awareness of where exactly we are in relation to it.

More information about the author and where to obtain the book can be found at her website.

"Weapons Platoon: A Marine's Life in Afghanistan," by Stephen Dupont opens at the National Museum of the Marine Corps on April 4, 2012. This series of thirty- five photographs is a portrait of a Marine Platoon that Dupont was embedded with in the Spring of 2009.
I Chose to take a simple and intimate path in this project and simply asked all the Marines in the platoon to write their answers to the question 'Why are you a Marine?' in a small journal I kept while I was embedded with them. While in the field I took the Polaroids of each Marine and gave them the positive as a reciprocal gesture for their participation and honesty and later back in Sydney printed from the negative."
The Exhibition will be on display for one year. Dupont will be giving a presentation at the museum on April 4, 2012, by RSVP only. Contact Felice Tebbe at Booklyn for more information.

"I attended the grand opening of the the International Photography Museum in Huai'an as part of the 2011 International Photography Exhibition in Huai'an.

A large selection of my works from "Afghanistan:The Perils of Freedom 1993-2009 was showcased alongside other international and Chinese photographers including Thomas Hoepker, Jason Florio and Wujialin.

The museum is without doubt the most ambitious of its kind in the world and we hope that it will provide a platform for not only outstanding Chinese photography, but also an unprecedented venue for international photography to be shown in China.

The museum will hold onto the exhibitions to become a part of its International Collections. In the words of my friend Thomas Hoepker, "this museum has the potential to become the Lourve of photography".
